Do you ever just feel like you need to reset your day (or your week! Or your life!)?  This speedy blueberry and raspberry smoothie feels like that giant RESET button – it’s packed with nutrients to get you feeling good and is practically bursting with the delightful combo of tartness and sweetness.

On Friday nights I make a smoothie to go with dinner (because it’s Friday, and somehow a smoothie feels like a reward for getting through the week).  Over the many years that I’ve been doing this, I’ve slowly gotten better at the art of throwing random frozen fruit and milk into the blender and hoping that what comes out is delicious.  Let’s just say that this mixed berry smoothie is far superior to the cantaloupe smoothie that I once experimented with [pure frozen cantaloupe smoothie =  very, very bad].

HOW TO MAKE THIS REFRESHING BLUEBERRY RASPBERRY SMOOTHIE

Step 1:  Start off by pouring your milk, agave, and vanilla into the blender (if you’re adding anything extra like protein powder or yogurt, go ahead and put that in now too).

Step 2:  Add in the blueberries and raspberries.

Step 3:  Blend.  If you’re using a blender with variable speed control (such as 1-10), spend 5-10 seconds on each speed.  If after moving up a speed, the motor sounds like it’s working too hard, go back down to the previous speed for another 5-10 seconds.  If the ingredients just don’t seem to be moving around very much, work your way back down to a lower speed  and add in a few more tablespoons of milk, and then slowly increase the blender speed again until the consistency is to your liking.  Enjoy!

[Side note: I’m an appliance manual junkie.  I can’t keep myself from reading every manual for every appliance!  I don’t know if this is me being smart or some sort of unhealthy obsession with knowing all the things, but it’s what I do.  When we got our Vitamix blender, the manual indicated that you should always work your way down to the lowest speed before turning it off because it’s better for the motor!  Who knew?  Now you do – yay you!]

SUBSTITUTIONS

Berries:  the blueberries and raspberries really pair well together in this smoothie, but feel free to substitute in whatever berries you have on hand, such as strawberries or blackberries or frozen mixed berries.  It will change the flavor a bit but will still be delicious!  You could also substitute part of a banana for some of the berries.

Milk:  Oat milk, soy milk, dairy milk, rice milk or almond milk would all work great in this!  If you use a milk that is unsweetened, you might want to add in an extra squirt or two of agave.  You can also substitute yogurt for some of the milk.  Substituting water for milk will technically work, but the smoothie will be a lot less creamy (try half water and half milk).

Agave: Feel free to substitute honey or another mild-flavored liquid sweetener

ALLERGY GUIDE

For gluten free:  as written, this recipe is gluten free, but it’s always good to double check your ingredients!

For dairy free/vegan: Use a milk alternative, such as oat milk, soy milk or almond milk (see above)

FAQS & TIPS

Are smoothies healthy?

It seems like any time you’re getting more fruits or veggies into your body, then that’s a win!  According to the Mayo Clinic and Healthline, blueberries and raspberries can reduce inflammation in the body and also may be protective against heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and cancer.  They’re also high in fiber and really just a win-win for your tastebuds and your body in general!

Can I make this smoothie citrusy?

Yep!  This smoothie is also delicious with a dash of citrus!  Add in 1/2 tsp of lemon juice or a packet of True Lime crystallized lime powder for a delicious punch of citrus.

What can I do to add some protein to this smoothie?

Try adding a scoop of vanilla protein powder, some yogurt, or a spoonful of ground flax seed.

Tip:  If you decide to use protein powder in this smoothie, put it in when you put in the milk, not at the very end of the recipe.  Putting it in at the very end can create a hard-to-clean goopy sludge on the walls of your blender.

What kind of blender do I need?

I use a Vitamix blender, but any high-powered blender will work.  If you don’t have a high-powered blender, you may just need to add some extra milk to your smoothie to help the blender process it.

How should I store leftover smoothie?

Smoothies are usually the very best when you drink them right after making them, but you can also freeze leftover smoothies in mason jars (or some other lidded container) for up to a week or two. When you’re ready to drink it, pull it out of the freezer, take off the lid, and let it sit on the counter for 30-60 minutes or so to liquify again.

Do I have to use frozen berries?

You can use fresh berries, but my experience with smoothies has been that the texture of the smoothie is a lot more better if you use frozen fruit instead of fresh fruit.

Tip: To save money, freeze your own fruit!  Buy fresh fruit, rinse it off, and pop it into a freezer bag and freeze for 3-5 hours.  I also routinely freeze fruit that’s gone a little soft (but isn't moldy!); slightly mushy berries and grapes make great candidates for future smoothies, if you simply freeze them.  My freezer is full of bags of fruit destined for smoothies!
